Our school

Garbutt State School was officially opened in 1932 in the suburb of Garbutt, close to the Townsville Airport and the RAAF base and historically had close connections to the Australian Defence Force Families who lived in the suburb. Our school logo consists of a fighter jet and the original school motto was 'We Aim High'. Our sports houses are Mirage, Sabre and Phantom, named after fighter jets.

The school motto we use today is 'Smart and Strong' and the students who now attend our school come from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Our school has a strong commitment to reconciliation and the promotion of culture and inclusion within our school community.
Students who attend our school are taught the Australian Curriculum by using an explicit literacy learning pedagogy. All children's learning abilities are catered for through classroom differentiation, ESL strategies, Learning Support and IT intervention.

2013 will see all children from Prep to Year 3 have access to their own laptops for literacy and numeracy enhancement. iPads, interactive whiteboards and online programs for Year 4 to 7 students are some of the strategies used to improve student outcomes. A "Students Achieving Success " program is an additional boost for enhancing reading and writing skills for students in years 4 to 7.

A successful whole school guided reading program has been introduced to improve our reading levels. During this timetabled time for all classes, support staff are allocated to each class so children are given 2 hours of intense support per week. This is also boosted by Xstrata's sponsorship of "Books in Homes" which equates to 3 books per student 3 times a year.

Current programs include National partnership low SES and Literacy, Chaplaincy, Playgroup once a week, Transition to Prep in term 4, Communities for Children initiatives, Good Beginnings support, Daily Breakfast and Starter Kits for every child at the start of every year.

Encouraging attendance plays a big part in our weekly duties activities - every day counts.
Teachers and students encourage each other to attend regularly and awards are given each term to encourage those who attend at 90% or better.

Garbutt State School offers dedicated teachers and small classes and we aim high for all of our students to achieve. Students are reminded on a regular basis of our school rules. We are committed to being responsible, respectful and safe.
