Garbutt State School was officially opened in 1932 in the suburb of Garbutt, close to the Townsville Airport and the RAAF base and historically has had close connections to the Australian Defence Force Families who lived in the suburb. Our school logo consists of a fighter jet and the original school motto was 'We Aim High'. Our sports houses are Mirage, Sabre and Phantom, named after fighter jets.
The school motto was modernised and we now include 'Smart and Strong' along with "We Aim High". The students who now attend our school, come from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Our school has a strong commitment to reconciliation and the promotion of culture and inclusion within our school community.
Our mission is to give our students the opportunity to achieve their full potential through fostering - learning, honesty, consideration and fun.
Students who attend our school are taught the Australian Curriculum by using an explicit teaching pedagogy. All children's learning abilities are catered for with classroom differentiation, EALD strategies, learning support and responses to intervention.
Current programs include the Australia Curriculum, chaplaincy, Giggle & Grow playgroup, Transition to Prep, daily Breakfast and lunch, PCYC lunchtime games and Swim top Survive. Book packs are provided for every student at the beginning of each year. Encouraging attendance is a big focus - every day counts. Cowboys support the school with the Try for 5 attendance program. Teachers and students encourage each other to attend regularly and awards are given to promote good attendance. Garbutt State School offers dedicated teachers and small classes and we aim high for all of our students to achieve. We are committed to being responsible, respectful and safe.
At Garbutt State School we value our strong links to the community, our students treat our school as one big family and we all look after each other.
