In 2012 all Queensland state schools began the implementation of the Australian Curriculum. This started with the English, Mathematics and Science curriculums in 2012, with the addition of the Australian History Curriculum in 2013 and Geography in 2014.
The Australian Curriculum website sets out the core knowledge, understanding, skills and general capabilities that are important for all Australian students.
The Curriculum into the Classroom (C2C) is an Education Queensland initiative to help introduce the new curriculum in Queensland state schools. There are C2C units of work for each Australian Curriculum Learning Area from Prep (foundation) to year 10.
The remaining curriculum areas of SOSE (Studies of Society and Environment), The Arts, Technology, HPE (Health and Physical Education) and LOTE (Languages Other Than English), are planned, taught and assessed using the Essential Learnings from the Queensland Curriculum.
Short Cycle Data Collection:
Teachers at Garbutt use regular and ongoing assessment and data collection to track student progress. This allows them to plan their units of work effectively and cater to each student’s individual needs through differentiated lessons.
Specialist Lessons:
Physical Education - All students attend a weekly PE lesson (every Thursday) with our PE teacher, Mr Greg Kimber. Students also participate in a variety of sporting events throughout the year, including athletics and swimming. Upon enrolment students are assigned to one of three sports houses, Sabre, Mirage or Phantom.
LOTE- Students in years 6/7 take part in Japanese lessons via distance education via webconferencing with our LOTE teacher, Ms Jade McKay - Ms McKay is based at the Charters Towers School of Distance Education.
